Broadband Inverted Microstrip Patches for Mobile Communication Systems

In this paper we propose an antenna geometry whose structure embodies dual stacked circular patches printed back to back on a single substrate in inverted microstrip configuration offering wideband performance suitable for mobile communication systems. The structure offers easy integration with active devices due to its inverted configuration as well as wide bandwidth without any enhancement in weight, volume or cost. Theoretical analysis and experiments on inverted microstrip circular patches have been used to optimize various parameters such as the radius of the upper patch and the lower patch, substrate thickness, height of the air-gap and the feed location for optimized bandwidth performance.
